After NOAA’s new GOES-18 became operational in January 2023 and congressional approval for the transfer was received in June, the Space Force accepted GOES-15 and re-designated the satellite EWS-G2.
NOAA turned over GOES-15 to the military after GOES-18 became operational and Congress approved the transfer.
The transfer of GOES-15 to the Space Force was announced on 2023-09-22.
GOES-15 operated in tandem with GOES-17 at the GOES-West orbital location at 135 degrees west longitude.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will power down the GOES-14 and GOES-15 spacecraft and place them into orbital storage by 2019-01-31.
GOES-15 was launched in 2010.
