Meteosat Third Generation Sounder 1 (MTG S1) is part of the wider MTG constellation that also includes imaging satellites such as Meteosat 12 and lightning imagers.
MTG-I1 was renamed Meteosat-12 in 2024 after entering routine operations and provides observation data with double the spatial and temporal resolution and a hundred times higher data rate compared to previous Meteosat versions.
Meteosat-12 also carries the Geostationary Search and Rescue Relay (GEOSAR) transponder.
Meteosat Third Generation Imager 1 (MTG‑Imager 1) is fully operational and has been renamed Meteosat-12.
An anomaly in a module of the Flexible Combined Imager extended the commissioning phase of Meteosat-12 after the spacecraft was launched in mid-December 2022.
Meteosat-12’s data will be central to the EU-funded Space for Early Warnings in Africa project implemented with the African Union Commission.
