Mitsubishi Electric won a contract from the Japan Meteorological Agency to build Japan’s newest geostationary meteorological satellite, Himawari-10.
Mitsubishi Electric was awarded the Himawari-10 contract in part because of the Japan Meteorological Agency’s high evaluation of Mitsubishi Electric’s DS2000 standard satellite platform and ground-data processing software.
The DS2000 satellite bus used for Himawari-10 includes a highly durable and precise attitude stabilization system.
The Himawari-10 imager will offer observation wavelength bands and resolutions superior to those of Himawari-8 and Himawari-9 and will gather two-dimensional information about cloud and water-vapor distribution and land, sea, and cloud temperatures from visible to infrared measurements.
Mitsubishi Electric’s modern production facility, launched in 2020, provides an advanced production management system intended to support efficient production of Himawari-series satellites.
Himawari-10 will be outfitted with a visible infrared imager supplied by L3 Harris Technologies.
Himawari-10 is a successor to the Himawari-8 and Himawari-9 satellites currently operating in geostationary orbit.
