    Event context

Kongsberg Vapenfabrikk (weapons factory), founded March 20, 1814 by Poul Steenstrup, was one of Norway's first industrial enterprises. Following the 1987 Toshiba-Kongsberg scandal (illegal export of submarine-quieting technology to the USSR), the company was restructured; defense activities continued as Norsk Forsvarsteknologi (NFT). In 1995, the company was renamed Kongsberg Gruppen.
