NEC Space Technologies, Ltd. (NECSpace) traces to space-related activity that began within NEC Corporation's business divisions in the 1970s. It became a distinct NEC subsidiary in 2001 (as a joint venture, later NEC TOSHIBA Space Systems, with Toshiba), and NEC acquired Toshiba's remaining shares in 2015, renaming it NEC Space Technologies. NEC itself has been Japan's leading satellite prime contractor since developing Ohsumi, Japan's first satellite (1970), and has integrated roughly two-thirds of all Japanese-built spacecraft.
