Rafael Advanced Systems

Rafael Advanced Defense Systems traces its origin to HEMED (Science Corps), established 1948 under David Ben-Gurion within the Haganah/IDF. Its weapons-development function was split off in 1952 as EMET, renamed RAFAEL (Hebrew acronym for the Authority for the Development of Armaments) in 1954. Rafael operated as a unit of the Israeli Ministry of Defense until December 2001, when an agreement was signed converting it into a state-owned limited company, effective 2002.
