China’s Tianwen-1 Mars mission launched on a Long March 5 rocket from Wenchang Satellite Launch Center at 12:41 a.m. Eastern.
The European Space Agency’s ESTRACK facilities provided support for the Tianwen-1 launch.
Technologies proven on Chang’e-3 and Chang’e-4 will provide altimetry and hazard avoidance for the Tianwen-1 landing.
The landing attempt for Tianwen-1 was delayed to allow the orbiter to survey candidate landing sites and provide data required for the lander’s descent.
Tianwen-1 will use a disk-band-gap supersonic parachute to slow from 460 m per second to about 95 m per second over roughly 90 seconds.
The tentatively named Tianwen-2 mission aims to collect samples from near-Earth asteroid 2016 HO3 (469219 Kamoʻoalewa) and return them to Earth before heading to main-belt comet 133P/Elst-Pizarro with a planned 2022 launch.
Tianwen-1’s entry vehicle will use a blunt-body aeroshell to slow from about 4.8 km per second to 460 m per second over approximately 290 seconds.
The Tianwen-1 orbiter is designed to operate for one Mars year, or 687 Earth days.
Chang’e-3 and Chang’e-4 provided altimetry and hazard-avoidance technologies used for Tianwen-1’s landing approach.
Tianwen-1 will use retropropulsion systems and technologies proven on China’s Chang’e-3 and Chang’e-4 lunar landers for the final descent and hazard avoidance.
