L-5 Society

US

The L-5 Society was an organization founded in 1975 to promote Gerard K. O'Neill's space colony concepts, particularly the construction of large, rotating space habitats at the L4 and L5 Lagrangian points in the Earth-Moon system. The society advocated for the development of nonterrestrial resources and opposed restrictions on private property rights in space. In 1987, the L-5 Society merged with the National Space Institute to form the National Space Society (NSS). The society's activities included public education, political lobbying, and promoting technologies related to space development and settlement.
