Missouri Botanical Gardens

US

The Missouri Botanical Garden, founded in 1859, is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the United States and a National Historic Landmark. While primarily focused on botanical research, conservation, education, and horticultural displays, it has a connection to the space industry. A sweet gum tree at the garden grew from a seed that traveled on the first flight of the Discovery space shuttle. The garden's Climatron dome also served as inspiration for the geodesic domes depicted in the science fiction film "Silent Running," which showcased future forests in space.
