National Cave and Karst Research Institute

US

The National Cave and Karst Research Institute (NCKRI) is a unique research institute created by the US Congress in 1998 to conduct, support, facilitate, and promote programs in cave and karst research, education, environmental management, and data sharing. NCKRI partners with the National Park Service, the State of New Mexico, and the City of Carlsbad. While its primary focus is terrestrial, NCKRI's expertise in cave and karst systems is valuable for space exploration, particularly in astrobiology and understanding potential habitats on other planets. Former NCKRI Associate Director, Dr. Penny Boston, went on to become the director of NASA's Astrobiology Institute.
