The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), established in 1993, is an autonomous Indian institute under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. NIOT develops indigenous technologies for harvesting living and non-living resources in India's exclusive economic zone. NIOT is also working on a manned submersible, Matsya 6000, for deep-sea exploration, with ISRO collaborating on the project. NIOT's work is to the ocean what ISRO's work is to space.
