Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory

US

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) is a large-scale physics experiment and observatory designed to detect cosmic gravitational waves and develop gravitational-wave observations as an astronomical tool. LIGO operates two gravitational wave observatories in unison, one in Hanford, Washington, and the other in Livingston, Louisiana. These observatories use laser interferometry to measure changes in length to detect gravitational waves. LIGO is operated by the LIGO Laboratory, a consortium of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and it is funded by the National Science Foundation.
