In addition to Booster 15-2 being the second Super Heavy booster to be reflown, with 24 of its 33 Raptor 2 engines being flight-proven, it will also attempt to demonstrate a new landing burn profile that V3 Super Heavy boosters will utilize before a targeted splashdown in the Gulf of America. Ship 38 will continue the lineage of targeted objectives from Ship 37: in-flight Starlink simulator deployments and relighting a singular sea-level Raptor engine. Multiple TPS tiles have once again been removed to intentionally stress certain sections of the vehicle during reentry. Following reentry, Ship will also demonstrate its own maneuvers in the last phase of flight, aligning with what may be necessary for Ship catch/recovery in the future.
