ERS-1 was launched into orbit on 17 July 1991 by an Ariane-4 launcher.
ERS-1 carried an imaging synthetic aperture radar, a radar altimeter and instruments to measure ocean surface temperature and winds at sea.
ESA operated ERS-1 and ERS-2 as a tandem mission for nine months during which ERS-2's ground track coincided with ERS-1's track 24 hours earlier.
