The new QZSS satellites that will host U.S. payloads will be in geostationary orbit.
The two U.S. payloads will be hosted on Japan’s geostationary Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) satellites.
QZSS employs geostationary satellites in inclined orbits to provide advanced navigation services across the Asia-Pacific region.
The QZSS constellation is designed to complement and enhance GPS signals over Japan for positioning, timing, and navigation services.
The loss of Michibiki No. 5 stalls Japan’s effort to complete a seven-satellite sovereign Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) network that was slated for completion by March 2026 to reduce reliance on U.S. GPS.
