EDF announced plans to develop MethaneSAT in April 2018.

EDF announced on 2019-01-10 that Ball Aerospace and Space Systems Loral had received study contracts with an overall value of $1,500,000 to advance MethaneSAT concepts.

The New Zealand government is providing $16,000,000 to support the MethaneSAT satellite program and to build a mission control center in New Zealand.

Approximately $4,000,000 of New Zealand’s $16,000,000 contribution is included in MethaneSAT’s $88,000,000 budget to reach orbit and begin operations, with the remaining funds dedicated to ongoing operations, ground control, and data handling.

Blue Canyon Technologies is supplying X-SAT to MethaneSAT, a subsidiary of the nonprofit Environmental Defense Fund, for an environmental monitoring satellite scheduled to launch in 2022.

MethaneSAT LLC signed a contract with SpaceX to deliver its satellite into orbit aboard a Falcon 9 rocket.

MethaneSAT, a subsidiary of Environmental Defense Fund, will launch its MethaneSAT spacecraft on a Falcon 9 in October 2022 through SpaceX’s smallsat rideshare program.

Ball Aerospace delivered the MethaneSAT satellite to Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara County, California 2024-02-05.
