United Launch Alliance cooperated with NASA on LOFTID under a Space Act Agreement and is studying using the inflatable decelerator technology to recover engines from its Vulcan rocket.
The Atlas V launch of the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) 2 satellite and NASA’s LOFTID payload was postponed on 2022-10-29 due to the need to replace a battery on the Centaur upper stage.
United Launch Alliance received a $25,000,000 Tipping Point award to advance hypersonic decelerator technology tested on the LOFTID project for potential use to recover the engine section of its Vulcan booster.
