The Department of Defense must decide on a follow-on to the current MUOS capability before 2034 because the current MUOS system is estimated to degrade by 2034.
The Space Force is expected to select one company in 2025 to manufacture two flight-ready narrowband satellites to modernize the existing MUOS constellation of five satellites in geosynchronous orbit.
The Department of Defense awarded the MUOS design contracts on 2024-01-25.
