Johns Hopkins Applied Physics LabIMAP Mission
9/24/2025
SpaceX is targeting September 24 for the launch of NASA’s IMAP mission to interplanetary transfer orbit from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The satellites launched include NASA's IMAP (Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe), Carruthers Geocorona Observatory, and NOAA's SWFO-L1.
IMAP is the fifth mission in NASA's Solar Terrestrial Probes program, which is managed by the Goddard Space Flight Center.
IMAP carries 10 scientific instruments to measure high-energy particles from the Sun, interplanetary magnetic fields, and interstellar dust.
IMAP's near-real-time data products include observations of the solar wind and energetic particles that can inform forecasters issuing advanced warnings and alerts for spacecraft and astronaut safety.
IMAP is targeted to launch in October 2024 on a Falcon 9 Full Thrust rocket from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.
The IMAP and Carruthers missions are managed by the Explorers and Heliophysics Projects Division at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
In November 2023 NASA delayed IMAP from February 2025 to April or May 2025 after completing a Key Decision Point D review to ensure the project team had adequate resources to address risks and technical complexities during system integration and testing.
NASA’s Kennedy Space Center preview for 2025 listed IMAP as launching in late 2025.
