Thermal infrared data is currently rare and is provided only by a few institutional satellites such as Sentinel-3 and Landsat 7/8.
Combined, Landsat 9 and Landsat 8 will add nearly 1,500 new scenes a day to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Landsat archive.
NaturalVue 2.0 is an image mosaic that combines more than 60,000 Landsat 8 images to create a seamless, virtually cloud-free, 15-meter base map.

As of June 5, 2013, NASA transferred operational control of Landsat 8 to the U.S. Geological Survey, and USGS began routine operations and data distribution for the satellite.
LDCM (Landsat 8) carried two instruments: the Operational Land Imager built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. in Boulder, Colorado, and the Thermal Infrared Sensor built by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
