On 2022-09-12 NASA dropped plans for a 2022-09-23 Artemis 1 launch after delaying a tanking test from 2022-09-17 to 2022-09-21.
The 2022-09-23 Artemis 1 launch attempt depended on completing and testing repairs to seals in liquid hydrogen lines that attach to the rocket’s core stage and obtaining Eastern Range approval to extend certification of the flight termination system.
NASA preferred to launch Artemis 1 during daytime for improved tracking of the SLS, which would have required waiting until at least 2022-11-22.
A change to a propulsion system provided by the Georgia Institute of Technology during Lunar Flashlight development caused the cubesat to miss its original secondary-payload launch opportunity on Artemis 1 because the propulsion system was not ready by fall 2021.
NASA spent $11,800,000,000 to develop the Space Launch System, a cost that covered work through the Artemis 1 launch in November 2022.
Unexpected erosion of heat shield material on Artemis 1 was a factor in NASA’s decision to delay Artemis 2 from late 2024 to no earlier than September 2025.
NASA launched 10 cubesats as part of the Artemis 1 mission in November 2022 at a cost of $13 million.
NASA's Artemis launch director, Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, announced several modifications have been implemented for Artemis 2 based on issues encountered during Artemis 1's wet dress rehearsals.
